What an accomplishment not only to have created this beautiful and well-written blog, but also to be honored in your first year as one of the top 40 blogs! Great job. This post brings me chills. I was caught at night in a huge storm on Lake Michigan on a small sailboat with 60 mph winds. We all thought we would die that night, but no one said so. We just pulled down the sails in the heaving waves and steered. I've read portions of The Perfect Storm and while I don't know the terror of sinking (we obviously made it) I know the sense of helplessness in the face of nature's fury. While your grandfather's death was tragic, it's wonderful to have these historical accounts (by Chas Dickens, no less) of the ship that took him under. RIP for sure. And I DO understand what you mean about loving ancestors we never knew!Linda Gartzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00740477693031139484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5134611249290839644.post-88310748555086402432011-10-31T21:36:35.613-06:002011-10-31T21:36:35.613-06:00Happy (belated) blogiversary! Thanks for sharing...Happy 1st Blogiversary Cheryl!
Thanks for sharing these stories about the Royal Charter.
It is interesting to see how many people came to Australia but didn't stay.
For anyone who is interested you can search an index of Outwards passenger lists from Victoria Australia via the PROV web site "Index to Outward Passengers to Interstate, U.K. and Foreign Ports, 1852-1908" http://access.prov.vic.gov.au/public/PROVguides/PROVguide023/PROVguide023.jsp. It looks like the Royal Charter made several voyages from Victoria before this last tragic voyage.A O'Brienhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07420277609206963374noreply@blogger.com
