Remembering the Space Shuttle Challenger and Crew

(This is a repost from 2011, but I know I'll never forget that day)

When I was in Junior High School I wanted to be an astronaut.  The guidance counselor would try to persuade me to not try for it because they hire so few a year, blah, blah, blah (yeah...wonderfully encouraging man...).  I was also in 8th grade when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded.  I was sitting in typing class when our science teacher, Mr. Nause, knocked on the door and called our typing teacher, Ms. Miller, out of the room.

Ms. Miller was a jokester.  She was a bit harsh too...not all of her jokes were the most pleasant, i.e. - telling kids with dimples that they were birth defects, etc.  I didn't mind her.  In fact I enjoyed her class, if not her humor (and I have dimples!).  So a couple minutes later she came back into the classroom and told us that the Challenger exploded.  The class laughed uneasily.  Everyone figured that with her sense of humor she was trying to make a joke, and we knew that you always laughed at her jokes!  She repeated it several times, but couldn't convince us.  She had to leave the room and get Mr. Nause to come back in and tell us that she wasn't joking.  Needless to say there was silence after that.

The period ended a few minutes later and it was time for gym class.  My gym teacher (I don't remember her name) sat in the gymnasium with the radio on listening to the news about the disaster.  There were only about 5 of us that sat there with her and listened and cried while everyone else did who knows what. It pretty much ended up being a free period for them. Here are some balls go do something.

There are three tragedies that occurred during my life that I feel certain I will remember for the rest of my life.  This is one of them.  How absolutely heart-breaking to think of their families (and I somehow always do think of the families when tragedy happens), and how terrible it was for Mrs. McAuliffe's class to be there watching it happened.  I hope they will be remembered for what they are.  Heroes making the way into the great unknown.  Explorers.  Trail-blazers.

Do you remember where you were?

Rest in Peace:

Sunday's Obituary - Clarence Frank Tabor...Frank? What?

Hazleton Standard-Speaker,
29NOV1974, pg24
I remember pulling this obituary years ago. I don't remember the exact date or anything. I just remember finding the obituary exactly where it should have been in the local newspaper and saying to myself, "Frank? What? His middle name was Paul!"

Perhaps lying about middle names was a family tradition. My father told me his middle name was Christopher. I believed for a good majority of my life that it was. My sister told me the truth a few days before I went to MEPS to join the Army. Considering I was going for a security clearance it probably wouldn't have looked good to get my father's name wrong. I get it though. My dad hated his middle name, although it was his dad's name so I didn't get the whole dislike of it. As for my grandfather fibbing his middle name, well who knows? Paul isn't a bad name so why give a false one.

As it turns out it was a nickname he used for the same reason that my dad lied about his middle name being Clarence. Apparently they both hated the name. Although if Clarence hated it why would he give it to his son? Goodness only knows. I know that when he snuck away and joined the Army he was known as "Corp" to his buddies. No doubt a nickname for "corporal."

"Clarence (Frank) Tabor

Clarence (Frank) Tabor of 837 Alter St. died late Tuesday evening at the Hazleton State General Hospital following a lingering illness.

He was born in Scranton a son of the late Adam and Jadwiga Tabor. His wife, the former Florence Bronsavage (sic), died in 1962.

The deceased was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hazleton.

Prior to his retirement seven years ago he was employed as an assembler at the L.F. Grams Co. in Allentown.

He is survived by two sone: Leonard, at home; and Paul of Hazleton; two sisters: Mrs. Leo Zener and Mrs. Stanley Romanski (sic) of Scranton; and a brother, Adam of Scranton. Three grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Turnbach Funeral Home with the Rev. Ghulam M. Nasrani officiating. Interment will be in the Mountain View Cemetery, West Hazleton.

Friends may call tonight from 7 to 9."

Family Reunion Friday - Cayemberg Family 1955

The clipping for this reunion is short, sweet, and to the point. I don't know if it was published in any other newspapers. It may have been, but Pampering Park is in the Green Bay area so the Press-Gazette would be the closest newspaper.

There are no extraordinary details in this year's clipping, but if we didn't know Florence Cayemberg nee Villers' age we'd be able to glean it here. Of course we wouldn't get "Florence" from the clipping, but it was most likely more important to acknowledge her marriage to Eli, mention him by name and that he had passed. We can also see that all of her children were in attendance. I guess short and sweet and still tell you quite a bit if you know where to look.

"18th Reunion Held By Cayemberg Family

Handwritten '1955'

Special to Press-Gazette

PULASKI, Wis. - The Cayemberg family held its 18th reunion Sunday at Pamperin Park with 138 guests present for dinner.

The 10 children of Mrs. Eli Cayemberg, Pulaski, Rt. 2, were in the group.  She is the widow of the late Eli Cayemberg and reached her 83rd birthday anniversary in January.

Mrs. Pat Cayemberg, Mrs. Lucy Anderson and Frank Cayemberg were in charge of the arrangements. It was planned to meet at the same place next year, with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fellows and Mrs. Frank Cayemberg as chairmen."

The clipping was taken from a scrapbook handed down to me by my mother in law.  It appears to be taken from the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

May all of our Service Members come home for good soon!

This memorial transcription was difficult to do. As I began inputting the names I noticed large numbers of casualties on October 3rd, 2009 and again on August 30th, 2010. The loss of any of our service members is tragic. Seeing so many taken at once compounds the loss. You can tell that something big happened those days.

I found an article in the New York Times that explains what happened in the October attack. These service members were stationed at a remote outpost in Afghanistan near the Pakistani border. It occurred in broad daylight and was estimated that 300 insurgents took part. You can read the entire article here.

The only article that could be found on the August 30th, 2010 incident was via Fox News*. They were killed by roadside bombs in Afghanistan. The AP's article was published the day of the attacks and the details seem sketchy and a little contradictory. You can read it here.

*I try not to make it a habit to post articles from untrustworthy news sites, but this was an Associated Press repost. I just wish I could have found the AP linked article.

**I'm not sure why Major Toczylowski's name was placed on this stone when he died in 2005. My best guess would be that it was somehow overlooked when the 2005 stone was created and they were rectifying that by memorializing him on the most recent stone. The year was not a typo. He did pass in 2005.

Freaky Friday - Woman Dies In Plunge

The Fond du Lac Daily Reporter,
16APR1926, pg1
Sometimes when I'm scrolling through microfilm I come across articles that aren't related to my family, but strike me as odd. I know there's a "Funny Friday" blogging prompt, but some of the articles I have wouldn't really be appropriate. I mean it isn't quite funny what happened here. It's just plain odd! See for yourself...

"Woman Dies in Plunge

Sets Self Afire, Falls From Roof While Walking in Sleep

New York, April 16, (RLW) - Believed to have set herself afire while walking in her sleep, Teresa Ferrara, 33, plunged in flames from the roof of her apartment house early today and died on the operating table shortly afterward as surgeons were attempting to remove a garden stake on which she was impaled. The dead woman was a somnambulist, according to her sister. A partly burned match found on the stairs leading to the roof led police to believe Miss Ferrara struck a match while walking in her sleep."

I don't have any siblings or children that would sleep walk so I'm not very familiar with it, but it is truly horrifying to think that someone could do all of this to themselves in their sleep. I have to admit that part of me wondered if there had been someone else involved. To sleepwalk off a roof is tragic. To set yourself on fire and sleepwalk off a roof is horrific. To set yourself on fire, sleepwalk off a roof, and impale yourself on a garden tool is unbelievable.

It's like death was coming for her and he wanted to make sure she wasn't getting away. Too many things happening at once, any of which could have killed her.

What is the most unbelievable news clipping you've seen?

Sunday's Obituary - Victor Laurent

Green Bay Press Gazette,
27JUN1960, Pg29
I was excited to be able to head out to the Brown County Library in Green Bay over our Christmas visit to Wisconsin. I was less excited about the technical difficulties I encountered when I was there. It really cut my research short.

I got there shortly after they opened and jumped on a microfilm reader. I got three obits printed out and then it stopped printing. I was directed to one of the more high-speed, modern microfilm readers. I printed out two very blurry obits and then heard a lady behind me ask, "Why are you using that one?" I found the question odd since she was directing me back to the older ones. I would have expected someone to ask me why I would want to use the old ones, but instead I simply let her know that the older one didn't like me much and stopped printing. After about 30.5 seconds she had it working and I left the crappy, new technology for the tried and true old beast that I was originally on.

I got several other newspaper obituaries printed out when it stopped working again. I repel technology and my tech-angel had left. I had this obit up so I grabbed my cell and snapped a picture that turns out to be less than perfect. I moved to another old beast and that one didn't print either. I texted my hubby and told him to come get me. I was all tapped out of patience for the day.

I didn't feel bad about taking the picture either. When my tech-angel got the old machine working it spit out three copies of one obituary that I ended up paying for so I figure that the library and I are more than even. Actually, they're quite cool and only charge for copies that turn out well, but I don't mind paying for the duplicate mistakes since libraries tend to not get much funding and the price is quite reasonable at $0.25!

Here's hoping that when I head to Madison in a few days to research at the Wisconsin Historical Society that my fingers of technological death don't kill the microfilm readers or printers!

Today I'm posting my husband's great grandfather, Victor Laurent. I've blogged about him before, but never shared his obituary. So since I have this awesome copy of it I thought I was about time.

"Victor Laurent

Family Reunion Friday - Cayemberg Family 1954, part 2

I previously transcribed an article for the 1954 reunion from a scrapbook that was passed on to me.  As I made my way through scanning and transcribing the articles I saw that there was a second and much longer article from a paper on this particular reunion so instead of including it in the first transcription and making that über-long I figured I'd do a separate post.

When you read the transcription below you'll notice that the guest of honor spoke to the reunion. What I found significant about this was the fact that she hoped they would all be back the following year. Florence Cayemberg was 84 at the time of this reunion. She most likely knew that there was a chance that she wouldn't be there, but she still wanted the reunions to continue. Florence would only make two more reunions. She died in 1956. In what she said she made her wishes known to all in attendance.

Another part of significance in the clipping was the while there were 120 in attendance (a fairly good turn-out) there were many that were missing because the reunion conflicted with another event. This can't always be avoided, but you should try to whenever possible. Don't be of the mind that the reunion comes first because this won't be the case for everyone. Sure it would be nice if it was, but you could have what would be nice or what is reality. Reality has a higher turnout when you accept it.

Now I'm not saying that you need to set a date that is good for everyone. That will never happen. I'm talking about the big stuff that is avoidable. Learn to be flexible and roll with the changes. Inflexibility is a one way ticket to animosity and the end of something good. I'm not being critical of this reunion. Rather I'm using the mention of the conflict as a talking point. Something that could be learned from.

Tombstone Tuesday - Henry and Henrieta Boegel

Henrieta Boegel
Henry Boegel

Henry and Henrieta Boegel are buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Cty Rd MM, Chippewa County, Wisconsin.  As you can see the tombstones aren't holding up exceptionally well, but you can make out their names.  You can also see that no additional information was put on their stones.  From census records I know that Henry was born sometime around 1817.  The 1900 census puts his birth at July 1817 in Germany, but we know that doesn't make it so.  It does, however, give me a place to start.

As for Henrieta, the 1880 census (she died prior to the 1900 census) had her 61 years of age so that would put her birth around 1819.  She too was born in Germany.

The Wisconsin Death Index has Henry (with his surname spelled "Baigel") passing on January 7, 1901 and Henrieta (spelled "Henrietta Beagle") passing on January 24th, 1899.  I still need to pull these death certificates and verify that they are indeed the right Boegels.  I'm fairly certain they are, but research must be done! Hopefully I'll find obituaries on them both as well, but I'm less hopeful there considering the time they died.  If they weren't prominent in the community there might be nothing or very little.  Still worth a look.  I'll cross my fingers that I'll hit some gold. It didn't happen during my most recent trip to the land of deep-fried cheese, but hopefully next time!

I wasn't deterred with the misspellings of their surnames in the Wisconsin Death Index either.  I was a German major in college and I sit there and shake my head at how some names were pronounced once they came to America.  I do know from my mother-in-law that Boegel (German would be Bögel) was pronounced "Beagle" in Wisconsin so this actually confirmed rather than frustrated my efforts.

Sunday's Obituary - Patrick H Cayemberg

Green Bay Press Gazette,
23JAN1997, Pg B-5
As promised today I'm posting the second obituary of my husband's paternal grandparents. Patrick passed shortly after his wife, Laura, who had been in a care facility for Alzheimer's at the end of her life. They loved each other dearly and Patrick wanted to last only long enough to ensure that Laura was cared for. He succeeded and passed only a few days after her.

"Patrick H. Cayemberg

Patrick H. Cayemberg, 87, Green Bay, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997 at a local hospital. Pat was born Sept. 15, 1909 in Rosier to the late Eli and Florence (Villers) Cayemberg. He married the former Laura Laurent on Nov. 15, 1928 and she preceded him in death Jan. 18, 1997. The couple farmed in Thiry Daems until 1939 when they moved to Green Bay. Pat was also a self-employed cattle buyer for may years. In the 60's and 70's he worked for Green Bay Canning. As a couple they are well remembered for selling pumpkins and Christmas trees for over 30 years from their home on University Avenue (next to the former Mona Lisa Restaurante). Pat enjoyed the great outdoors, deer hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling.

Survived by four sons and spouses, Roland and Shirley Cayemberg, Green Bay; Darold Cayemberg, Vulcan, Mich.; Patrick and Dolores Cayemberg, Green Bay; Glen and Sarah Cayemberg, Union Grove one daughter-in-law, Marge Konkel, Wind Lake; 25 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lucy Anderson, Green Bay; three sisters-in-law, Mae Laurent, Luxembourg; Alice Cayemberg, Howard; Angie Cayemberg, Pulaski; nieces and nephews.

Family Reunion Friday - Cayemberg Family 1954

The clipping below is short, sweet, and to the point. Your newspaper clippings don't have to be very long, but putting something in is important. You can see in the clipping below that a gift was given to the matriarch of the reunion. By this year her husband had passed and the reunion was started for both of them. It continued well past the passing of them both.

Is your patriarch and/or matriarch of your reunion still alive? How do you recognize them? Do you recognize them each year? Perhaps even more importantly, if they have passed do you still acknowledge why you're there? If your reunion has been going on for a really long time (spanning generations) do the newer attendees understand how and why it started? You stand a much greater chance of enlisting the younger generation's help and garnering their support if they understand its origins.

A reunion is a tradition that gets started by a group of people. Traditions are malleable. They can change and they must if you want to keep them going. Without the support of a younger generation your reunion will die out. It's inevitable. If one or a tiny group of people claim ownership of a reunion and don't let anyone else in when they pass on so will the reunion. A reunion isn't about the people that are running it. A reunion is about the family. When you forget that you might as well stop and bury the thing now.

"Cayemberg Family Has Reunion (handwritten '1954')

The 17th reunion of the Cayemberg family was held at Pamperin Park Sunday with Mrs. Harvey Moureau and Mr. and Mrs. Felix Cayemberg, Ensign, Mich. in charge.

Mrs. Eli Cayemberg, 84-year-old mother of the group, received a purse from the members of her family.  At present she is staying with the R. C. Andersons, 875 Shawano Ave.

Green Bay people present at the reunion include Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Moureau and family, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Gouin and daughter Susie Ann, and Mr. and Mrs. Roland Cayemberg and daughter Joan Linda.

The 1955 reunion will be held the first Sunday in June at Pamperin Park with Mrs. Pat Cayemberg, Mrs. Russell Anderson and Frank Cayemberg as chairmen."

The clipping was taken from a scrapbook handed down to me by my mother in law.  No newspaper name was given, but other reunion articles were from the Green Bay Press Gazette.
