Sunday's Obituary - Mary Dart nee LeGrave

Me and my great organizational skills! Here let me put this in it's own special folder on my desktop and then completely forget about it. Seriously...that's what I did. For my punishment I will not put lip balm on my chapped lips.

Anyway, I was cleaning my computer's desktop over the holidays. It was more than halfway filled with various icons of mostly garbage. That's when I came across this clipping that I needed to edit and stitch together to post on. I also realized that I needed to update her entry in my family tree. I didn't have her maiden name and was missing her daughter Jean from my tree.

I'd make a New Year's Resolution to fix this in the new year, but we always seem to break those. Let me say that I'll try to be better.

Funeral Card Friday - Eugene Dart

Thank you to Sally Marcelle for kind
permission to share this on my blog
I have a lot of memorial/funeral cards in my possession. As I was working on my family tree on Ancestry.com one of the hints that I was given was this memorial card. It was uploaded by Sally Marcelle to her family tree. Rather than just grabbing it and posting it here or attaching it to my tree I emailed her to ask permission to share it. She very kindly granted it.

Eugene Joseph Dart was the child of Jean Baptiste Dart Sr and Marie Josephe Podor. They had six or seven (I just potentially found a new one, but haven't confirmed it yet) children: Jean Baptiste Jr, Marie Julienne, (Ferdinande...maybe), Jules Joseph, Eugene Joseph, Marie Antoinette Josephine, and Desira. Eugene is my husband's great, great grandfather.

On April 29, 1871* in Robinsonville, Wisconsin Eugene married Josephine Hermans in the Robinsonville Chapel. Together they had 12 known children: Louisa, Charles Antone, Jean Baptiste, Odile, Adolphe, Jule, Desirea, Mary, August Joseph, William, Eli Joseph, and Wilbert. Their daughter, Mary, is my husband's great grandmother.

Eugene and Josephine are buried in St. Martin's Cemetery in Tonet, Wisconsin.

*According to Josephine's obituary the couple was married on 30APR1870. Eugene's has 30APR1871. The Wisconsin Marriage Index they were actually married 29APR1871. I'll have to see if I have a hard copy of that certificate in my possession or if I'll need to pull one over Christmas when I'm back in Wisconsin.

Sunday's Obituary - Kate Dart nee Jadin

Clipping taken from family scrapbook
I blogged about Kate's husband, Charles Dart, previously and noted that in his obituary his wife's name was given as "Desira." It's not though. It's Kate and has been in every document and census record that I've come across. I'm sure that obituary went over like a lead balloon when the family saw it.

The obituary has some great information in it too. Dates for her birth and marriage as well as the date her husband passed away. It would have been nice to have her parents' names, but I'm not tracing back past Kate so it's irrelevant to me, but could be useful for another researcher.

Kate is buried in St. Martin's Cemetery in Tonet and has a FindAGrave memorial to visit.

"(Handwritten Feb 7, 1963)

Mrs. Kate Dart

Funeral Card Friday - Edith Dart

Memorial Card - Edith Dart (reverse)
Memorial Card - Edith Dart

Last week I shared the memorial card for Eli Dart. Edith is Eli's wife, but I don't know her maiden name. As I mentioned I'll be pulling their obituaries whenever I get back to Wisconsin to check for a maiden name, but it's not always there. It's always frustrating to a genealogist to see someone listed in an obituary as "Mrs. Insert-Husband's-Full-Name-Here" and then no mention of who she was before she married him. I know it was how things were done, but it was stupid even back then (cue the righteously indignant). I'll stick with that though because people that may have known a woman in her childhood and didn't know who she married would have no idea that it was someone they wanted to pay their respects to when an obituary was posted in the newspaper. So I get that it was the norm for certain periods, but I'm going to exercise my right to grumble about it anyway.

Edith was born on July 10, 1899 and passed away on October 13, 1981 (FindAGrave memorialabout four months before her husband. They weren't separated for long. Rest in peace, Edith.

Sunday's Obituary - Charles Dart

Algoma Record-Herald, 21JUN1935, pg1
I had to do a double-take when I read his obituary and went to verify it with my family tree. This is my Charles. I looked up his obituary to get more information, but I had his wife down as "Kate" in the family tree. Do you know what else? His wife's name is Kate.

She's Kate on their tombstone. She's Kate in every stinking census record. I also have Kate's obituary (which I'll post later) that confirms it, although it lists her husband's death as June 10th not the 11th. Kate's maiden name was Jadin, so why she's listed as Desira is beyond me. Perhaps I'll figure that out one day.

As for Charles he was born on November 10, 1874 in Tonet to Eugene and Josephine Dart nee Hermans. He was the second oldest of 12 children. He was married on September 12, 1900 to Catherine Jadin (I've got the marriage certificate to prove it), and died June 11, 1935. He is my husband's great, great uncle.

"Charles Dart, Tonet Farmer, Dies of Cancer

TONET - Charles Dart, 61 years of age, a resident of Tonet, died Tuesday, June 11, after an illness of about eight months. Cancer of the liver was given as the immediate cause of death.

The funeral services for Mr. Dart were held from the St. Martin's church in Tonet at 10 o'clock last Thursday. The Rev. L. A. Dobblesteen conducted the services and interment was made at the Tonet cemetery.

Born in Tonet, Charles Dart resided there all his life. He died on his Tonet farm which was being rented and operated by his son, Fred, and family.

Deceased was married to Desira Jadin at the St. Martin's church in Tonet.

Surviving are: One son, Fred, living on the Dart farm in Tonet; one daughter, Mrs. John (Libbie) Mandarin, Lincoln; five brothers, August, John, William, all of Tonet, Eli, Bay Settlement, and Wilbur, Walhain, and three sisters, Mrs. Victor Laurent, Mrs. Louis Vandenhouten, both of Tonet, and Mrs. Mathy, Michigan. Three grandchildren also remain."

Funeral Card Friday - Eli Dart

Memorial Card - Eli J. Dart (reverse)
Memorial Card - Eli J. Dart

Eli Dart was the 11th of 12 children born to Eugene and Josephine Dart nee Hermans. He was born on September 21, 1894 and passed on February 21, 1982. He married Edith (maiden name unknown) on November 11, 1919 in Tonet, Kewaunee County, Wisconsin.

Eli passed away in Luxemburg, Kewaunee, Wisconsin according to the SSDI, but is buried in Green Bay, Brown County in The Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum in Nicolet Memorial Gardens.

Since I don't know his wife's maiden name I'll be pulling Eli and Edith's obituaries when I go home unless I happen to find it hidden away in my files before then. I've seen someone list Edith's maiden name as Laurent on a family tree on Ancestry, com, but there is no supporting documentation. I'm not willing to run with that on someone's word, but I'll find out if it's true or not when I check the newspapers.

Rest in peace, Eli.

Tombstone Tuesday - Sylvester and Bertha Gaedtke nee Dart

Marker for Sylvester and Bertha Gaedtke nee Dart in the Shrine of the
Good Shepherd Mausoleum, Green Bay, Wisconsin
I took this photo of the Gaedtke marker in the Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum in Nicolet Gardens, Green Bay, Wisconsin well over 5 years ago. It was before my father-in-law passed and I was walking through the mausoleum with my in-laws and they were pointing out to me family markers. Gaedtke didn't mean anything to me at that time although I'm sure he explained who Bertha was. It was all sensory overload though so I didn't retain it. Too much information at once.

Then Bertha passed away in 2010 five days after my father-in-law. I saw in her obituary that her maiden name was Dart and I finally recalled the connection.

As I mentioned in a post about her parents, Bertha passed away on May 20, 2010. Her husband died on November 3, 2009. This photo was taken before either had passed so there are no death dates on it. I'll have to see about stopping by the mausoleum sometime and getting a new picture. I'm sure by now they've been added.

Rest in peace, Sylvester and Bertha.

Sunday's Obituary - Wilbert Dart

Green Bay Press-Gazette
12JUN1984, pg C-6
Ha! Did I say I needed to pull Wilbert Dart's obituary the next time I was home? I take it back. I pulled it right out of my "Dart" file. It was just sitting there waiting for me to enter it into my blog and family tree. Done! This is one of the main reasons I'm slowly going through my files trying to sort it all and into my tree properly! Not only will my tree be sourced properly and with all the research I've already done, but it will actually make my research more effective because I won't be wasting time looking for things I already have!

"Wilbert Dart

Wilbert Dart, 87, Rt. 4, Luxemburg, died Monday evening at a Kewaunee nursing home. He was born Feb. 18, 1897 in Tonet to the late Eugene and Josephine (Hermans) Dart.

He served with the United States Army during World War I and married Alice Delveaux Dec. 30, 1920 at St. Francis Church, Duval.

His wife preceded him in death Dec. 15, 1976.

He operated a farm at Walhain until his retirement 22 years ago. Mr. Dart was a member of the World War I Barrack No. 3240 Kewaunee and the American Legion, Ralph Kline Post 262 of Luxembourg. He served 18 years on the Walhain school board.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Bertha and Sylvester Gaedtke, Rt. 4, Luxemburg; one granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Jill and Randy Bosman, Rt. 4, Luxemburg; two great grandsons, Barry and Bradley Bosman, Rt. 4, Luxemburg, and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Lucy Delveaux, Algoma.

He was preceded in death by one infant son, six brothers, and six sisters.

The obituary for his wife, Alice Dart nee Delveaux, was posted previously.

Funeral Card Friday - Wilbert W Dart

Memorial Card - Wilbert W Dart (reverse)
Memorial Card - Wilbert W Dart

So far I've only found a handful of Dart memorial cards in my collection. Wilbert was already in my family tree with a good amount of source materials and research already done. What I don't have is an obituary for Wilbert but this memorial card is one of the places I can get a date of death from.

Wilbert is buried in the Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum in Nicolet Memorial Gardens, Green Bay, Wisconsin (FindAGrave memorial). The best place for me to look is going to be in the Green Bay Press-Gazette because he's being buried in Green Bay so he must have had family (or a reason) to choose Green Bay. According to the SSDI and the Wisconsin Death Index he died in Luxemburg, Kewaunee County, so if I don't find anything in the Press-Gazette I know where to check next.

Wilbert was a veteran of World War I. I'd love to have a distant cousin contact me and be willing to share a photo of him in uniform or a better photo in general than the two I have. One is from this memorial card and the other is from a newspaper clipping of his Golden Anniversary. With a photo of him in uniform or just a better one I'd be able to put him in my annual Veterans Day tribute. A gal can dream.

So Wilbert has a WWI Draft Registration Card on Ancestry.com, but that doesn't mean he served. What tells me he served was the BIRLS Death File entry that gives his dates of service from August 8, 1918 to September 2, 1919 and that he served in the Army (wish I had a rank too).

I have one child for Wilbert and Alice Dart nee Delveaux in my tree and her name is Bertha who passed away May 20, 2010.

Tombstone Tuesday - William and Maggie Dart nee Jadin

Tombstone of William and Margaret Dart nee Jadin at Allouez Catholic Cemetery and Chapel Mausoleum,
Green Bay, Wisconsin*

To accompany last Friday's Funeral Card this is the tombstone for William and Margaret Dart nee Jadin. Margaret was born in 1897 and died on August 6th, 1961 in Kewaunee County. While her full death date isn't on the tombstone I was able to find it in the Wisconsin Death Index. I've already covered William's information in my Friday post.

I still need to pull both of their obituaries to add to my files.

*Thank you so much to Jeanne Biebel for submitting the photo to FindAGrave and graciously permitting me to post it on my blog.

Funeral Card Friday - William (Bill) Dart

I wanted to post some of the Dart memorial cards that I have, but I didn't know which one to start with. So far I've found four in the box of memorial cards and all are in my family tree. I decided to start with William because I didn't have a death date for him. It would be an opportunity to cite that in my tree as I get on with the post. Getting back into the funeral cards I have in my possession was a great reminder that they are not merely decorative memorials. They are a valuable source of information.

William was the 10th of 12 children born to Eugene and Josephine Dart nee Hermans. He married Margaret Jadin on May 26, 1914 and they had five children: Irene, Mame, Marcelle, Verna, and Clifford. William is my husband's 2nd great uncle.

He can be found in the 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, and 1940 censuses and he has a memorial on FindAGrave. I've got him down for an obit-pull in my research calendar. I already have some information on his descendants in my family tree from an online obituary for his son, Clifford, who died in 2005.

Rest in peace, Bill.

Sunday's Obituary - Victor Laurent

Green Bay Press Gazette,
27JUN1960, Pg29
I was excited to be able to head out to the Brown County Library in Green Bay over our Christmas visit to Wisconsin. I was less excited about the technical difficulties I encountered when I was there. It really cut my research short.

I got there shortly after they opened and jumped on a microfilm reader. I got three obits printed out and then it stopped printing. I was directed to one of the more high-speed, modern microfilm readers. I printed out two very blurry obits and then heard a lady behind me ask, "Why are you using that one?" I found the question odd since she was directing me back to the older ones. I would have expected someone to ask me why I would want to use the old ones, but instead I simply let her know that the older one didn't like me much and stopped printing. After about 30.5 seconds she had it working and I left the crappy, new technology for the tried and true old beast that I was originally on.

I got several other newspaper obituaries printed out when it stopped working again. I repel technology and my tech-angel had left. I had this obit up so I grabbed my cell and snapped a picture that turns out to be less than perfect. I moved to another old beast and that one didn't print either. I texted my hubby and told him to come get me. I was all tapped out of patience for the day.

I didn't feel bad about taking the picture either. When my tech-angel got the old machine working it spit out three copies of one obituary that I ended up paying for so I figure that the library and I are more than even. Actually, they're quite cool and only charge for copies that turn out well, but I don't mind paying for the duplicate mistakes since libraries tend to not get much funding and the price is quite reasonable at $0.25!

Here's hoping that when I head to Madison in a few days to research at the Wisconsin Historical Society that my fingers of technological death don't kill the microfilm readers or printers!

Today I'm posting my husband's great grandfather, Victor Laurent. I've blogged about him before, but never shared his obituary. So since I have this awesome copy of it I thought I was about time.

"Victor Laurent

LUXEMBURG (PG) - Victor Laurent, 75, a Luxemburg, R. 2, farmer, died at 8 a.m. Sunday in a Green Bay hospital following a stroke. He had been ill for three months and a patient at the hospital for four weeks.

Mr. Laurent formerly served as assessor of the Town of Luxembourg for 10 years, town treasurer for two years and as secretary of the Tonet Farmers Cheese Factory for 20 years.

He was born June 14, 1885 and was married to Mary Dart at Tonet Jan. 10, 1906.

Survivors are his wife; a son, Norman, who operates the home farm at Tonet; two daughters, Mrs. Pat (Lauren (sic)*) Cayemberg, Green Bay, and Mrs. Goldie (Annie) Malcore, New Franken; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Final rites will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Martin Catholic Church, Tonet, and burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call after 7 o'clock tonight at the McMahon Funeral Home here where the Rosary will be said at 8 o'clock tonight and Tuesday night."

*Name should read "Laura."

Tombstone Tuesday - Mary Dart

The other week I posted the tombstone for John B. Dart (Jean Baptiste) and it was one of those, Oh-my-goodness-you-mean-I-had-that-tombstone-all-along moments.  This would be the other half to that pair.  Mary Dart was John's wife (their marriage date is still unknown).  Mary and John were my husband's 3rd great grandparents.

John and Mary had six known children:  Jean Baptiste Jr, Marie (Mary), Jules, Eugene, Antoinette, and Desira (Desire).

I'm still slowly chipping away at the Dart-line. Always feels good to make some progress, no matter how small. Until next time, have fun tending your roots!

Wedding Wednesday - Seeing Diamonds

Back in November I did a Wedding Wednesday post for Mr. and Mrs. Eli Dart's 50th Anniversary.  As I looked through some clippings this evening I noticed another clipping and it was for their 60th Anniversary.  That's diamonds, baby!

You can read more about Eli and Edith Dart in my previous post here.

Tombstone Tuesday - John Dart

This was one of those tombstones I had a picture of...you know...just in case I make the connection to someone in my tree.  I went to look for a "John Dart" in my tree this evening and do a little research to see if he might fit somewhere, and was delighted to find him right in there already.

Jean Baptiste Dart born July 21, 1813 in Grand-Leez, Namur, Belgium.  Died August 20, 1880 in Wisconsin.

Now if only I had written down the cemetery that I was in years ago when I took the photo.  I swear, I can be scatter-brained sometimes!  Ah well.  It shouldn't be too difficult to retrace my steps.  I'll check on that death certificate too and hope it wasn't left blank.  Either way I'm delighted to realize that I've got Jean  Baptiste's tombstone.  One of the many pieces of information I had filed away that needed to be properly filed away!

Sunday's Obituary - Mrs. Wilbert Dart

While trolling through my files this evening I came across the obituary for Mr and Mrs Wilbert Dart.  I decided to post the one about Mrs Wilbert Dart first, since she died first (so you'll have to wait until next week for Wilbert's obituary).

I had previously posted a photo clipped from a newspaper about their golden wedding anniversary and in that I made the guess that the hand-written date on the clipping more likely referred to the actual date of their anniversary rather than the publication date in the newspaper.  Well, according to this obituary, they were married on December 30th 1919.  We all know that obituaries are only as good as the person submitting the information so this isn't conclusive proof of a wedding date, but it did narrow it down a bit.

The obituary was published in the Green Bay Press-Gazette on Thursday, December 16th, 1976 (page B9).  Alice died on Wednesday, December 16th, 1976.  Just shy of their 57th anniversary.

I do tend to cringe a bit when I see obituaries that say "Mrs So-And-So" died, but this obituary was well written.  Even when it mentions her daughter and granddaughter it inserts their given names.  Great tips for researchers in obituaries like this.

Alice was my husband great, grand aunt.

"Mrs. Wilbert Dart

Mrs. Wilbert (Alice) Dart, 83, Rt. 3, Luxemburg, died unexpectedly Wednesday evening at her home.  The former Alice Delveaux was born June 4, 1893 in Duval, Wis.  On Dec. 30, 1919, she married Mr. Dart at Duval.  She was a member of the St. Elizabeth Society of St. Amand Church and a member of the World War I Veterans Auxillary.

Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Sylvester (Bertha) Gaedtke, Rt. 3, Luxemburg; one granddaughter, Mrs. Randy (Jill) Bosman, Rt. 3, Luxemburg; two great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one infant son, four sisters and three brothers.

Friends may call at McMahon Funeral Home, Luxemburg, after 7 tonight and after 2 p.m. Friday.  Rosary at 8 this evening by the St. Elizabeth Society  Wake service 8 p.m. Friday.  Funeral 10 a.m. Saturday, at St. Amand Church, Walhain, with the Rev. Sebastian Schalk officiating. Entombment in the Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum."

Wednesday's Child - Raymond Dart

Clippings like this always make me sad.  No parent should lose a child.  Raymond is my husband's 2nd cousin once removed.

"Infant Son of Darts Buried The Morning

Special to Press-Gazette

LUXEMBURG, Wis. - Funeral services for Raymond Dart, six-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Dart, Luxemburg, route 4, who died Saturday afternoon in a Green Bay hospital after an illness of one week, were held at 9 o'clock this morning in St. Martin church at Tonet.  Burial was in the church cemetery.  The McMahon Funeral home was in charge of the arrangements.

The infant, who was born Nov. 1, 1949, is survived by his parents; a sister, Darlene, age 2; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Matheys, of Sugar Bush; and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. August Dart of Luxemburg."

Wordless Wednesday - Four Darts

Sunday's Obituary - Mrs. Odile Dart

Back to trying to sort out my husband's Dart line with another news clipping from an old family scrapbook.

Odile was my husband's great grand aunt and I actually have her and her late husband, Jule, already in my family tree...and with all their kids!  Yay!  I did not have Odile's date of death in the tree though.  I've noticed that in my collection of clippings, the hand-written dates have (so far) always referred to the date of event.  I verified this by checking on Ancestry.com and found Odile in the Wisconsin Death Index, 1959-1997.  Now the date is in my tree and both the clipping and the Death Index have been cited.

While the newspaper has no publication information, I did see from the Death Index that she died in Brown county.  I see from the obituary that her service was at SS. Peter and Paul Church and she was buried in Allouez Cemetery.  While the name for the church is quite common, the three of those are not and it is most likely that this clipping (like most others I have) came from the Green Bay Press-Gazette.  I will, of course, verify the next time I head up to Wisconsin.
May 1960, Green Bay Press-Gazette

"Mrs. Odile Dart [hand-dated May 7, 1960]
